We are up to our second installment of our three-part series with our highly-reputable Personal Trainer Rob Siciliano on Inclusive HIIT.

What is your philosophy on inclusive HIIT training?

RS – “My philosophy on inclusive HIIT training is providing a safe, enjoyable and inviting exercise environment, where everyone, regardless of fitness, age or body type can attend and create a better version of themselves.”

RS: “With HIIT we push our limits, focus on functional goals, motivate each other and gain strength. HIIT is also about being part of a community where we have fun and support one another throughout.”

How do you modify exercises to accommodate different fitness level and abilities within a HIIT session?

RS – “Accommodating to everyone's fitness level can be challenging at times, however I usually achieve this by providing a few different alternative exercise options for each exercise (i.e. low impact and high impact), in which usually one or more options are suitable to the client's fitness capabilities. In addition, I adjust the work to rest ratios between each interval, which allows the client more time to get set up for each exercise and or a quick demonstration on my behalf to ensure the client is doing it correctly.”

What are your strategies for motivating clients with different needs and fitness goals to stay engaged with HIIT sessions?

RS - “A HIIT session is usually based around 8 different exercises, therefore I aim to incorporate at least a few exercises that each client enjoys doing per session. I also try to provide guidance and encouragement throughout, i.e. motivational words, and help them stay positive during the tough times. I also try to add variety, incorporate a few games and play music that everyone enjoys listening too.”

How do you collaborate with clients to set realistic and achievable goals for HIIT training, considering their individual needs and limitations?

RS – “Depending on the client either myself or an EP will start with an initial assessment and consultation for each client, addressing their goals and needs, conducting any fitness tests we find necessary specific to each client and finding out what each clients limitation are. Then we use this information when choosing exercise selection, sessions per week and recommended intensity/progressive overload to help each client set achievable goals.”

How does HIIT make a positive impact on people living with disabilities?

RS – “Providing each exercise is suitable or modified to suit each client's limitations and restrictions, HIIT can provide an increase in overall physical fitness such as cardiovascular, strength and endurance, leading towards a better quality of life. HIIT is not all about physical improvement, it has many other benefits too such as improved mental health, Chronic disease management and in recent studies, HIIT has shown to improve cognitive function in older adults.”
