1. Tell us about yourself?

I graduated with a Masters of Speech Pathology in 2018 after completing a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology). Since then, I have worked as a community paediatric Speech Pathologist within the disability space. Outside of work, I love to spend time reading, travelling and doing Pilates!

2. What made you choose a career in Speech Pathology?

I always knew I wanted to work with people, particularly kids, and was interested in child development. I had family members who accessed Speech Pathology and always thought the sessions looked fun, so was inspired to look into becoming a Speech Pathologist from this.

Speech Pathology Session.

 3. What services do you offer?

I can offer individualised therapy sessions for a range of goals, such as speech or language development, early intervention, complex communication needs or literacy challenges. I can complete speech, language and literacy assessments to guide goal setting. I have experience in trial and prescription of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices and can support clients with complex communication needs, or who do not communicate verbally. I work within education environments or day options programs to ensure individuals are set up for communication success. I am certified in the Switch Access Measure (SAM) and have completed a range of additional trainings including the 2-day Pragmatic Organised Dynamic Display (PODD) workshop, Hanen More Than Words and a range of AGOSCI trainings in the AAC space.

4. What does a Speech Pathologist do?

A Speech Pathologist works with individuals, families and support teams to assess communication, language, literacy and mealtimes and provide targeted support, training and intervention to build skills in these areas.

5. What can Speech Pathologists Diagnose?

A Speech Pathologist can diagnose speech sound disorders, language delay and language disorder through formalised speech and language assessments. I have experience using a range of formalised assessments such as the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF) and the Diagnostic Evaluation of Articulation and Phonology (DEAP).

6. What is a day in the life of a Speech Pathologist?

Every day looks a little bit different! Generally, I will spend time seeing clients in the clinic, their homes, education or community environments delivering 1:1 therapy to work towards their goals. I may attend meetings with families or school staff to ensure continuation of strategies. My day might also include working on reports, whether that’s a progress report, AAC prescription or assessment reports.

7. What is the most rewarding part of your work?

The most rewarding part of my job is getting to work alongside clients and their families to achieve their goals. Watching clients learn new skills and increase their engagement in meaningful interactions is always rewarding.

8. Who may benefit from Speech Pathology services?

Anyone who requires support to communicate, read or write, eat or drink or engage socially can benefit from seeing a speech pathologist. Speech Pathologists can support individuals across the life span, in a range of environments. Speech Pathologists can also work with families to provide parent coaching for early intervention.

9. What do you do when a client is making slow progress or is uncooperative?

We would work with the client, their families and their wider support team to address any barriers, develop strategies to support engagement and consider the client and their situation holistically. This ensures we are providing quality and client centred services.

10. How do you stay current with best practices in such a rapidly evolving field?

Continuing to access up-to-date, quality training and professional development opportunities ensures that I can continue to provide best practice as things are always evolving.
