Why pilates is a must for your child
We speak with our Exercise Physiologist Tegan Berry-Smith who facilitates our new and exciting Resilient Pilates group program for kids!
Our Resilient Kidz Pilates Group program is run at our Beulah Park gym on Tuesdays at 4:15pm - 5:00pm. Each term runs for 8 weeks commencing the second week of the school term.
How can Resilient Health Group help your child?
“At RHG, we offer a wide range of therapies to support your child’s growth and wellbeing – including Occupational Therapy, Exercise Physiology, Play Therapy, Art Therapy, and group programs. Our team is made up of friendly, passionate professionals who work together to create a positive and supportive space where your child can develop skills, build confidence, and have fun along the way.”
What inspired you to create the Resilient Pilates group program for kids?
“I have always been passionate about helping people move well and have seen the incredible benefits Pilates offers adults. This made me wonder why we aren’t teaching these same skills to kids in a way that is fun and age appropriate? Children are growing up in a world where posture challenges, screen time and busy schedules are the norm. The kids Pilates program provides them with the tools to develop strong, healthy bodies and movement confidence from an early age.”

Why do you believe Pilates is a must for kids?
Pilates builds the foundations of healthy movement – strength, stability, balance, and body awareness. For kids, these foundational skills are crucial during their growth years to support posture, coordination, and injury prevention. In addition, it’s also a mindful form of exercise which encourages focus and self-control, which can help in school and other activities. Most importantly, it’s non-competitive, so every child feels included and successful.”
What does a typical Pilates class look like?
“Every class begins with a fun and playful warm up to capture the kid’s attention and get them moving – this may be an animal-inspired activity or themed adventure. We then move into age-appropriate Pilates exercises, incorporating a range of exercises and stretches. Movements are broken into short, manageable chunks, often disguised as challenges etc., so that kids are building their strength and coordination without even realising it. Each class ends with a calm cool down and some mindfulness exercises, leaving them feeling positive and energised.”
How is a kids Pilates class different from a Pilates class designed for adults?
“The main difference is in the delivery. Adult Pilates often has a large focus on technical precision, while kids Pilates focuses movement exploration, fun and imagination. All exercises are simplified, and the pace is faster to match children’s attention spans. Tools such as storytelling, visual cues and games are used to help them learn movements in a way that feels natural.”
What kind of movements or exercises do children learn during classes?
“They learn a variety of core-strengthening exercises, balance challenges and flexibility stretches. We might crawl like a bear, balance like a flamingo, or jump like a frog. These movements help to develop coordination, agility, and stability while keeping the sessions light-hearted and fun.”
What are some of the main benefits children can gain from regularly attending Pilates?
“The benefits are both physical and mental. Physically, kids develop a stronger core, better posture, greater flexibility and improved balance. Mentally, they build focus, patience, and confidence in their abilities.”
What should parents know or consider before enrolling their child in our Resilient Pilates group program?
“Resilient Pilates is suitable for all fitness levels, and no prior experience is needed. The classes are inclusive, supportive, and non-competitive, making them perfect for both active kids and those who prefer lower-impact activities.”
How can Kids Pilates help children with their posture or coordination?
“Pilates strengthens the muscles which support good posture, especially in the back, shoulders and core. The controlled movements encourage children to become more aware of how their bodies are positioned, while the balance and coordination exercises train both sides of the body to work together smoothly.”
Are there any specific physical skills children might develop through these classes?
“Yes – they will develop core strength, balance, flexibility, spatial awareness, and control over both movement and breathing. These are vital and transferable skills that will benefit all forms of sport and everyday life.”
What makes this program a unique activity compared to other children's sports or classes?
“It is one of the few activities that combines strength, flexibility, balance and mindfulness all in one session. It is gentle, yet highly effective, and because it’s non-competitive, every child can focus on their own progress rather than comparing themselves to others.”
What is the overall goal or aim for children participating in the Pilates program?
“My aim for this kids Pilates program is to inspire a lifelong love for movement. I want each child to leave class feeling confident, strong, and proud of what their body can do. Through giving them the skills for good posture, coordination, and body awareness now, we’re setting them up for a lifetime of healthy, active living.”
